Reading and Language Arts

Department Summary

Cicero Public Schools uses a comprehensive literacy framework to guide instruction in reading and language arts. Instruction for both reading and writing is centered around the workshop approach. The goal of our Literacy Department is to create readers and writers that are able to think critically and actively engage with text independently. Reading is taught with the use of trade books and a core reading program; ReadyGEN for Kindergarten-6th grade and MYPerspectives for 7th-8th grade; incorporating the strategies of guided reading, shared reading, read aloud, independent reading, vocabulary, phonics and phonemic awareness. The Writing Units of Study is used in grades K-8 for English language arts instruction. Spanish speaking students in the transitional program receive reading and writing instruction in both English and Spanish using the ReadyGEN Biliteracy Pathway curriculum.
