Department Summary

Illinois recently adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) that are based on A Framework for K-12 Science Education. The standards are designed with the goal that all students be literate in science when they graduate from High School. The new standards are aligned with the English Language Arts (ELA) and Math Common Core State Standards. The structure of the standards incorporate three dimensions for learning science:

  • Disciplinary Core Ideas
  • Science and Engineering Practices
  • Crosscutting Concepts

The new standards allow students to learn science in greater depth. Students use the science and engineering practices and the crosscutting concepts to reach a deeper understanding of the disciplinary core ideas.

District 99 is in the process of transitioning to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and will be fully aligned by June 2017
