Math

Program and Department Overview

The Math Department is filled with people who are passionate about helping students learn how to do the math. We believe math is a series of problems to be solved that have many different ways to get to the correct answer. We believe math needs to be discussed and justified and answers need to be defended for their correctness.

Math should be experienced and should be tangible. The Math Department believes students of all ages learn best when manipulatives are in their hands and they can see why the answer works. We believe that math is so much more than a series of facts to be memorized and we want all students to be developed as math-thinkers, not just fact-memorizers. In order to get to our goal, we have chosen specific resources that support the development of math thinking and math talking.

From Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade, students are always asked “Why is that correct?  How do you know?” We know that answering questions like that are critical to developing the thinking that allows students to write equations and algorithms to solve real world math problems.
