Social Studies
Program and Department Overview
The Social Studies department follows the Illinois Social Science Learning Standards, which are divided into five categories: Inquiry Skills, Civics, Geography, Economics/Financial Literacy, and History. Some of the goals for Social Studies learning include the following:
*Develop an understanding of the world around them and their roles and responsibilities as a citizen
*Develop an awareness and acceptance of the diversity within society and the challenges and benefits of living in a multi-cultural world
*Understand values, democracy, rights, freedoms and how they have developed and changed over time
*Recognize the impact of historical and/or current events and understand how those events and groups of people involved influence and change people's lives
*Develop critical thinkers, problem solvers and informed decision makers
