We Move Forward Together!

πŸ“š A FULL-CIRCLE CONNECTION BRINGS THOUSANDS OF BOOKS TO DREXEL STUDENTS 🎁

Posted Date: 03/30/26 (11:00 AM)

This week, Drexel Elementary School was filled with excitement as students received thousands of brand-new books β€” each one opening the door to new ideas, imagination, and opportunity.Β

The annual donation, made possible through a continued partnership with Community Consolidated School District 181, has grown into a meaningful tradition β€” bringing more books and more access to students each year.Β

At the center of that connection is a story that starts right here in Cicero.Β

District 181 Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia is a former Cicero student, having attended Burnham and Goodwin Schools before beginning his career in education in nearby Morton District 201, where he served as a teacher, dean, assistant principal, and principal over a nine-year span.Β

So when families from Oak Elementary School in Hinsdale began collecting thousands of new books each year and looked for ways to expand their impact, Cicero was a natural place to start.Β

What began as a simple idea has since grown into a lasting partnership β€” one that continues to expand in both reach and impact.Β

Each year, the experience keeps going beyond the books themselves.Β

Fifth-grade students from Oak visited Drexel to help distribute the books and spend time reading with younger students β€” creating a day centered on literacy, connection, and a shared love of reading.Β

At its core, this effort is about access, opportunity, and making sure every student has the chance to discover the power of a good book.Β

As the partnership continues to grow, so does its impact: More books in classrooms. More students inspired to read.Β

And a powerful example of what can happen when people stay connected to the communities that helped shape them!
