Alongside principal and AP leadership, Lago brings experience as a suburban school board member
Cicero District 99 is pleased to announce Joanna Lago as the new incoming director of teaching and learning (grades 6-8) for the District, effective July 1.
A member of the District community for eight years, Lago is coming into her new role from her most recent position as principal of Sherlock Elementary School since the fall of 2021. Prior to her leadership at Sherlock, Lago served as an assistant principal at Unity Junior High School.
Lago has worked in the field of education for 19 years, in which her teaching expertise includes roles as 9th-grade English and reading remediation teacher and sixth- through eighth-grade English language arts teacher.
In her five years at Sherlock, Lago has been recognized as a steadfast mentor and guide for both fellow administrators and teachers, and has garnered a well-respected reputation across her school community.
“The lessons I have learned from District 99 teachers, administrators, students and our family community have certainly shaped who I am as a leader,” she said. “I am excited to apply that knowledge and continue growing together with the entire District 99 community.”
Lago’s credentials include a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from DePaul University, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Illinois Chicago, and a master’s degree in instructional leadership from American College of Education.
Outside of District 99, Lago remains an unwavering supporter of public education, currently serving as a school board member for LaGrange School District 102 since 2025.
