🏆 ONE NIGHT, HUNDREDS OF ATHLETES, & A COMMUNITY BUILT THROUGH SPORTS 🔥
Last night's sports banquet was proof of what happens when an entire community commits to something bigger than wins and losses.Â
Unity Junior High's annual Athletic Banquet brought together every season, every team, every athlete, and every family for one unforgettable night celebrating the power of sports. Fall, winter, and spring athletes filled the room dressed to impress, surrounded by teammates, coaches, parents, siblings, grandparents, and supporters who have spent the last year cheering from bleachers, driving to practices, working concession stands, washing uniforms, and believing in these kids every step of the way.Â
And when you stepped into the gym, you could feel it immediately: This is different.Â
Every program took time to recognize the moments that defined their seasons. MVP awards. All-conference honors. Academic achievements. Most improved players. Team leaders. Unsung heroes. Athletes who battled adversity. Athletes who discovered confidence. Athletes who found a second family wearing orange and black.Â
But beyond the awards and applause, something even more important stood out. The culture.Â
Soccer. Softball. Basketball. Volleyball. Wrestling. Bowling. Dance. Track & Field. Cross Country. Special Olympics.Â
Hundreds of athletes. Dozens of multi-sport competitors. Programs built with pride. Facilities that rival many high schools.Â
For a junior high program, what Unity is building is remarkable. And it doesn't happen by accident.Â
It happens because of coaches who give countless hours of their lives to mentor students far beyond the game itself. Coaches who stay late after practice. Coaches who teach discipline, accountability, leadership, toughness, teamwork, and resilience. Coaches who care deeply about building character as much as building athletes.Â
Every successful program is built on people willing to pour into the next generation, and last night was a reminder of just how many incredible coaches make Unity athletics special.Â
It also happens because of parents. Parents who wake up early. Parents who rearrange schedules. Parents who spend weekends in gyms, on sidelines, at tournaments, and on buses. Parents who celebrate victories and help their children grow through disappointment.Â
Athletics may happen on the court, field, track, mat, or lanes — but behind every athlete is a support system making sacrifices nobody else sees.Â
Then came one of the most emotional moments of the night: the presentation of the Don Wajda Award.Â
Named after longtime coach Don Wajda, who lost his battle with cancer 15 years ago, this award is the highest honor an athlete can receive at Unity Junior High. It represents everything sports are truly supposed to stand for — leadership, commitment, respect, responsibility, and character both on and off the field.Â
Because the real purpose of athletics is not just creating better athletes. It’s creating better people.Â
When the championship teams were announced — Varsity and JV Boys Soccer, Varsity Girls Soccer, JV Co-Ed Softball, and our Special Olympics Team — the room erupted with pride. But what made those moments meaningful was understanding everything those athletes invested to get there: the practices, the conditioning, the setbacks, the teamwork, the sacrifices, and the commitment to something larger than themselves.Â
That is the value of a strong athletic program.Â
Sports teach young people how to handle pressure. How to lead. How to respond to failure. How to trust others. How to represent their school and community with pride. Those lessons last forever.Â
And at Unity Junior High, the future is being built right now.Â
If your child has any interest in athletics — whether they are already competing or just looking to get started — summer sports camps are the perfect opportunity to become part of something special. Camps help young athletes build skills, confidence, friendships, and a love for competition long before they ever step onto a junior high team. Every athlete’s journey starts somewhere. For many future champions, leaders, and teammates… this summer is where it begins!Â
