Cicero School District 99

We Move Forward Together!

🚀 THE SECRET TO STAYING AHEAD NEXT SCHOOL YEAR? IT STARTS IN THE SUMMER! 😎

Today, Cicero District 99 wrapped up another incredible Summer School program, and what a three weeks it has been.

Hundreds of our Kindergarten through 7th grade students chose to spend part of their summer doing something remarkable: investing in themselves.

When people hear the words "summer school," they often picture students trying to catch up. But that's only part of the story.

The truth is that Summer School is about growth.

It's about keeping young minds engaged, building confidence, strengthening skills, exploring new ideas, and giving students a head start on the next school year.

Research consistently shows that many students experience a "summer slide," with academic skills slowing, stagnating, or even declining during the long summer break — particularly in reading and math. Some studies have found students can lose weeks or even months of academic progress over the summer when they are not engaged in learning opportunities. Structured summer programs help students maintain those hard-earned gains and continue moving forward.

That is exactly why Summer School matters.

And here's the best part:

Our program only runs for 3.5 hours in the morning.

Students still have the entire afternoon to swim, play outside, visit family, go to the park, attend camps, ride their bikes, and enjoy everything that makes summer special. Summer School doesn't take summer away — it enhances it.

Whether a student needs additional support, wants to prevent learning loss, or is ready to challenge themselves and get ahead, Summer School provides an opportunity for every learner.

As we celebrate the success of this year's program, we also want families to start thinking about next summer.

Imagine what can happen when a child spends just a few hours each morning strengthening their reading, sharpening their math skills, building confidence, and preparing for the future.

That's not giving up part of a summer.

That's gaining an advantage.

Thank you to our dedicated teachers, support staff, administrators, and families who made this year's Summer School program such a success. Most importantly, thank you to our students for showing up, working hard, and proving that learning doesn't stop when the school year ends.

We can't wait to see even more students join us next summer.

Because every day of learning matters. Every opportunity matters. And every child deserves the chance to keep growing!
