🏡 $96 MILLION LATER: THE PROMISE MADE TO CICERO FAMILIES IS BECOMING REALITY! 🎀

A major step forward in protecting Cicero families from future flooding is now underway.

Following the devastating July 2023 storms and flooding that impacted countless homes, businesses, and even some of our schools, the Town of Cicero secured a transformational $96 million Disaster Recovery Grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Today, that investment is being put to work for our residents.

Homeowners can now apply for the Town of Cicero's Basement Flood Prevention Program through the CDBG-DR Intake Center, located inside the Cicero Community Center at 2250 S. 49th Avenue. Through this program, eligible homeowners may receive the installation of a check valve designed to help reduce the risk of sewer backup and future flood damage.

Last week, Town officials celebrated the opening of the Intake Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and it was fitting that Cicero District 99 School Board President Tom Tomschin had the honor of cutting the ribbon.

While many know Mr. Tomschin for his more than decade of dedicated service on the District 99 Board of Education, including his leadership as Board President, he has also been at the forefront of Cicero's recovery efforts as the Town's Executive Director of Housing.

From the earliest days following the disaster, Tom worked alongside Town President Larry Dominick and the Board of Trustees to advocate for the resources our community desperately needed. Through countless meetings, planning sessions, and trips to Springfield, they never stopped fighting to bring meaningful relief to Cicero families. Tom witnessed firsthand the damage these floods caused to homes throughout our community and understood the urgency of securing assistance for residents still recovering from the disaster.

This new program is the result of years of persistence, partnership, and commitment to the people of Cicero.

As a school district, we are proud to recognize Tom Tomschin's leadership and tireless advocacy. His work extends far beyond our schools, helping improve the quality of life for families throughout our entire community.

If you believe you may qualify for the Basement Flood Prevention Program, now is the time to apply.

Applicants should be prepared to provide:
• Proof of identification
• Proof of citizenship or lawful residency
• Household income documentation
• Proof of property ownership
• Proof the property served as your primary residence during the July 2023 disaster
• FEMA or SBA disaster assistance application documentation
• Proof of homeowners insurance

For assistance with the application process, visit the CDBG-DR Intake Center at the Cicero Community Center, 2250 S. 49th Avenue.

Thank you to President Larry Dominick, the Board of Trustees, and everyone who worked tirelessly to secure these critical resources for the residents of Cicero. Most importantly, thank you to Tom Tomschin for his unwavering dedication to the families, students, and homeowners who call our community home.
