For the past decade, Cicero District 99 has hosted Parent University—an initiative created to connect local parents with the District and guest speakers, providing educational resources to help bridge the gap between socioeconomic barriers and academic success.

Parent University is typically a four hour event and usually takes place during the heart of lunch or dinner time.
In order to accommodate these factors a complimentary meal will be provided to all those that attend!

FREE Child-Care
We understand that finding child-care is often a reason why parents can not attend events.
That is why organizers at Parent University have several certified staff members who can take care children over the age of 4 for the duration of the event!

Keynote Speakers
Ms. Jacqueline Camacho Ruiz
Born in Mexico City, Camacho-Ruiz first moved to the U.S. at the age of 14, where she quickly learned both English and German. In 2006, she launched JJR Marketing, an award-winning marketing and public relations firm based in the western suburbs that focuses on establishing and expanding the marketing strategies of people and brands along with creating successful digital marketing content.
In addition to her marketing and PR firm, Camacho-Ruiz is the founder of Fig Factor Media, which focuses on international book publishing specializing in self-development, anthologies, business and children's books with messages of inspiration and encouragement. She also is the creator of Today's Inspired Latina books series, a two-time cancer survivor, and, since 2017, on of only a few Latina small airplane pilots in the U.S.
Dr. Jose Hernandez
Hernandez grew up the son of Mexican immigrants and migrant workers, finding a passion for science and math as a child and eventually fulfilling a lifelong goal of working for NASA.
Following his undergraduate and graduate studies in electrical engineering, Hernandez joined a commercial partner in assisting with the development of the first full-field digital mammography imaging system used to identify the early stages of breast cancer. In 2009, Hernandez served as a mission specialist aboard NASA's STS-128 NASA, traveling more than 5.7 million miles in space in two weeks and helping provide maintenance of the International Space Station.
Ms. Erika L. Sanchez
Sanchez, a Cicero native, poet, and New York Times best selling author of the critically acclaimed novel, "I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter," is a graduate of both Daniel Burnham Elementary School and J. Sterling Morton High School District 201.
The daughter of undocumented Mexican immigrants, Sanchez is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of New Mexico. Her work has been featured in magazines including Time, Rolling Stone and Cosmopolitan, and she has been profiled on programs for NBC News and National Public Radio.
Sanchez was named a Princeton Arts Fellow at Princeton University and has been named a National Book Awards finalist.
